FOREWORD
The death of Dr. Douglas Heath, of Birmingham, has robbed the
Numismatic World of one who appreciated the beauty of a fine coin.
His collection is not extensive, but it comprises some of the choicest
examples of English die sinker’s art as well as a few from Ancient Greece.
It is surprising to find in so small a compass so many of the desiderata
of British Numismatics :—Sovereigns of all the Tudor Monarchs, including
the very rare third issue of Edward VI, and one of Mary dated 1554.
There are Ryals of Elizabeth and James I; Angels of Henry VI, Edward V,
Philip and Mary, Mary alone, James I and Charles I, and a really fine
George Noble and Henry VIII.
Among the Stuart coins the following are worthy of note:— The Oxford
Treble Unite 1643, lot 84, the Bristol Unite of 1645, the two Spur Ryals
of James I, as well as the EXVRGAT Unite and the Laurel lot 69.
Dr. Heath took great interest in the West of England mints of the
Civil War period 1642-1646, and the collection includes many coins of the
Truro—Exeter and the Aberystwyth—Shrewsbury—Oxford series. The exact
attribution of some of these pieces may be still conjectural, but generally
the cataloguer has followed Dr. George C. Brooke’s arrangement in
““ English Coins.”’
Most of the coins are from famous collections, and where possible this
catalogue shows the provenance: unfortunately Dr. Heath’s death left
his affairs in considerable confusion, and many of the coin tickets were
lost or displaced, thus rendering it impossible to give the coin’s pedigree.
We have illustrated the catalogue with eight collotype plates of
illustrations. These give a good idea of the high standard of condition
set by the collection.

PRICED CATALOGUES.
A FTER each sale these catalogues are
issued with the prices realised printed
in the margin opposite each lot, thus giving
at a glance a reliable guide to values.
The final test of value must always be
auction prices rather than the figures given
in books of reference, for changing times
and fashions soon render the latter obsolete
and misleading. |
On the average we issue twelve Coin and
Medal catalogues a year, some of which
are usually of sales of important collections.
The priced catalogues are posted to
subscribers as soon as ready, usually about
a week after the date of sale and the
subscription 1s
ONE GUINEA per annum.
